This course is recommended for learners who are aiming to meet university entry requirements for GCSE or are preparing to apply for the Access course. This is flexible course which is suitable to meet learner's needs. This qualification is nationally recognised by colleges, universities and employers as an equivalent to GCSE.

Functional Skills Maths

The purpose of the Functional Skills Maths Level 1/2 qualification is to prepare the learner for work, study, and life. Learners who achieve this qualification will demonstrate the ability to calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages, how to create tables and charts, how to use metric measurement and how to work out averages, amongst other things. Learners will be able to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in real life situations.

1Is functional skills equivalent to a GCSE?
Functional Skills at Level 1 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade E-D (2-3), and Level 2 Functional Skills at Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE Grade C-A*(4-9). Entry levels give learners the basics in maths and English that you would use in work, study, and everyday life. This qualification is widely accepted as a GCSE equivalent.
2Is functional skills easier than GCSE?
Functional Skills qualification are not necessarily easier but, they can be suitable to students who have failed maths and English. All you need is to put the hard work and revision.
3Do universities/employers accept Functional Skills?
Functional Skills Maths and English qualifications prove your ability and proficiency in Numeracy and Literacy and are considered equivalent to a GCSE C or above. The qualifications are now accepted by most universities and employers for a variety of courses.
4What is the difference between functional skills and GCSE?
Functional Skills are skills-based qualifications that offer students the skills to use English, maths, and ICT in day-to-day life situations. Whereas GCSEs, are academic qualifications that prepare learners with a strong theoretical knowledgebase and skillset.
5How do I login and track my progress?
Once you book the course with us, you will be provided with login details. All progress tracking can be accessed directly via our dedicated online learning platform.
6How long is the course?
The exam board recommends 55 hours of guided learning for this course. However, you can complete this qualification on your own pace. We offer 3 months for you to complete the Functional skills course, but it all depends on you how quickly you get ready for the final exam. Once you are ready to take exam, we will book it for you.
7Are there any exams?
Yes, there is one exam for this course which will need to be given at an approved exam centre. You can also take this exam remotely with invigilation using video chat software such as Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp. The exam cost is £175 including a pre-assessment and mock tests and is not included in the price of the course.
8What if I need tutor support during my course?
You will get full tutor support if you have any issues. You can contact your tutor via e-mail and telephone or arrange a one-to-one web tutorial.
9When can I sit the exam?
You need to book the exam within 3-months of course purchase otherwise you will not be able to take the exam. If you are not successful in the exam, you will need to purchase the course package again.
10When will I get my results and certificate?
It usually takes 7 to 10 working days to get your results. Once you pass your exam, you will receive nationally recognised English and Math qualifications.
11What is the pass mark for Functional Skills?
The pass mark for each assessment is determined by an awarding process. The pass mark range is stated below: 1) Functional Skills English • Reading Level 1 assessments need to have a pass mark in the range of 14-16 marks. • Writing Level 1 assessments need to have a pass mark range of 21-23 marks. • Reading Level 2 assessments need to have a pass mark in the range of 13-15 marks. • Writing Level 2 assessments need to have a pass mark in the range of 21-23 marks. • Speaking, Listening and Communicating assessment is internally assessed and externally verified. There are no pass marks. 2) Functional Skills Maths • Both Level 1 and Level 2 assessments need to have a pass mark in the range of 32-37 marks.
12Can you fail functional skills?
The Functional Skills assessments are either graded as 'pass' or 'fail'. There are no portfolio elements for these qualifications. You can take online exams on demand, but paper-based exams must be taken during weeks set by the awarding body.
