Functional Skills Level 1 English Course (Classroom or Online)

The purpose of the Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification is to prepare the learner for work, study, and life. Learners who achieve this qualification will demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, listen, and communicate in English. Learners will be able to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in real life situations.

Our functional skills qualifications are nationally recognised and are equivalent to GCSE Level.If you left school some time ago, it’s too late to get your vital GCSE qualifications with us.

We offer maths functional skills at level 1 and 2. 

Level 1 qualification is equivalent to GCSE grade D-G.
Level 2 qualification is equivalent to GCSE grade A*-C.

Study Method:

At Bright Learning centre, this course is delivered by our qualified and experienced tutors. We deliver this course to meet individual’s needs, therefore you can complete this course by the following methods:

• Classroom-Based Learning
• Distance-based Learning/Online Learning

Classroom-Based Learning:

We offer classroom-based Functional skills Maths course in Leicester. The course is delivered over 2 hours per week. The classes are held at all our branches. We offer daytime, evenings, and weekends classes. The Classroom-based training will include sessions by a qualified and experienced tutor. If you are looking to learn in a classroom environment, there is extra cost of £200 for 6 weeks classes. Once you complete your training and ready to sit in your exam. We will book your final exam

Distance/Online Learning:

The distance learning course is completed at your own pace with a Tutor’s Support & Guidance. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. We will provide you with all the necessary material by online learning portal once you book the course with us. Once you book this course, you will be given 6 months to complete your course. Once you are ready for the exam please book your exam by emailing on info@brightlearningcentre.co.uk

Assessment:

There are two written exams (one Reading, one Writing) and a speaking and listening assessment where you would have discussion with one other person, and you will be observed by your tutor. Functional Skills exams can be taken at regular times throughout the course when you are ready. Once you feel competent at the level you wish to gain, you will be required to take an invigilated exam. This can be done on the date of your choice from home/online or in our centre. 

Please note: You must book the exam/s within 6-months of purchase otherwise you will not be allowed to take the exam. If in the unfortunate event you are not successful in the exam, you will need to purchase the course package again.

Course content

Upon joining the course, you will undertake an initial assessment to determine your current level. You can progress from Entry Level to Level 1 and Level 2 of the programme. Gaining a functional skills English qualification can enhance job and learning opportunities. You will have the opportunity to improve:

  • Audience and purpose
  • Structure and planning writing
  • Writing style for different purposes
  • Spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Types of text and their purpose
  • Scan reading
  • Detecting point of view, implicit meaning and/ or bias

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however, candidates should already have a good understanding of this subject, ideally no less than one level below the level they wish to take. If you are taking this course online, candidates should already have a good understanding of IT. You will be required to complete an assessment in order to find out your level and identify the most appropriate level for you to start with.

Once you pass your exam, you will receive nationally recognised English qualification.
