Technically perfect process of drying and impregnation of wood

The most effective method of protecting wood by pressure creosetting has, however, the disadvantages that it requires complex and heavy equipment such as boilers, impregnation tanks, etc., and drying devices for artificial drying of wood. Later it turned out that the noted disadvantages can be completely eliminated by using a new method of drying and impregnating wood.

In December 1944, the Technical Council heard reports from the scientific staff of the NILES (Construction Electrification Research Laboratory) Narkomstroya tt. Popova, Levina and Guzheva on a method developed by the laboratory for drying wood with high-frequency currents followed by impregnation with creosote.

Under the influence of high frequency currents, the wood dries to 18-20% humidity and simultaneously heats up to a temperature of 100-110 ° C. After that, the tree is immersed in an antiseptic bath, which quickly and deeply impregnates the pores of the wood without additional pressure, since when the dried wood cools, a vacuum forms inside it. The drying process takes no more than 20 hours.

This method can be used to heat and impregnate not only the entire log, but also any part of it, which is very important when using this method of creosoting in the construction of pile hydraulic structures, when impregnation is required to protect only the underwater part of the piles from woodworms.

Extremely valuable in the method of drying wood with high-frequency currents is also the fact that the wood, despite the unusually short drying time, does not crack at all. This is explained by the fact that when exposed to high-frequency currents, the core of the tree warms up to a much greater extent than the sapwood, and in accordance with this, the drying process in the core proceeds more intensively than in the sapwood. During air drying, as is known, the opposite pattern is observed, and the tree cracks because the outer sapwood layers dry out first.

To generate high-frequency currents, relatively simple and cumbersome equipment is needed (the entire 100 kW installation fits in a two-axle railway carriage): its basis is a high-frequency long-wave generator with a power of 100 kW. The production of such generators has already been established at the Svetlana plant. The energy consumption for drying 1 cubic meter of wood does not exceed 250 kW/hour.

The described drying and impregnation process is the most advanced currently known and does not require complex and bulky drying, steaming and impregnation devices.

The Technical Council recognized this method of creosoting wood as the most advanced and instructed Glavmorstroy to apply it to construction in one of the ports of the Union in order to prevent rapid leaching of antiseptic in seawater. The Technical Council instructed Glavmorstroy to assign VILES to develop a method for waterproofing wooden parts of structures impregnated with antiseptic by coating their surfaces with a compound that reliably protects creosated wood from leaching with seawater.
